Watched that movie 'John Wick' and it had some great action scenes. I noticed the main character using some Center Axis Relock shooting techniques and it's peaked my curiosity. I've heard of it before and seen it with the video game 'Splinter Cell,' but I've never taken it seriously at all. Has anyone here taken a Center Axis Relock course? If so, what was your opinion of it and did you take anything useful away from it? I don't think I'd adopt every aspect of the doctrine, but was wondering whether a few things they teach might be useful.

I've long wondered what the soup sandwich shooting technique that the fellow who brought the FN 5.7 to take my CCW class was called.
I've taught hundreds of CCW classes, and this guy came in already an 'expert.' Bad-mouthed my technique in my own class, giving me 'suggestions' on my stance, grip, etc.
Very much 'that guy.' Well, we come to the range portion of the class, and buddy pulls out his 5.7, takes his target, and he's such an expert that I figured I'd just tell him how many rounds he needs to put in the practice and test target, and we'd be good to go. I could focus on my other students, a mixed bag of blue-haired old ladies, younger couples, and the like, all shooting my.22 pistols. As I walk down the line, I see ol boy about whack himself in his shooting glasses with the slide shooting like the videos. Stop and watch him for a bit, and at 7 yards, my class 'expert' is all over the fucking place. The 70 year old women in class are turning in softball sized groups in the center of the target and this guy has holes on every edge of the 24X45 inch B-27 target.
He had to re-take the test after I unfucked his technique while the rest of the class waited, and that shamed him into shooting like a normal human being. He also ran out of 5.7 ammo so had to use a.22 target pistol. Originally Posted By tigerx: Had to google what is was. Here's his bio from his company: 'Paul Castle was born in Ramsgate, England on January 14, 1959. He joined the Kent Police Force at the age of 18 and served in a variety of capacities including Detective and Training Officer.
After his retirement from the Police Force, he moved to the United States to begin his new career as a Tactical Trainer. His many accomplishments with Sabre TTRR, the company he founded, are both impressive and extensive. During the last several years of his life, Paul dealt with cancer but continued to provide his high standard of training. Paul actually missed the airing of an A&E documentary on his training due to being in the hospital for surgery. Paul ultimately lost his battle with cancer on September 14, 2011.
Paul Castle was an incredibly unique individual - He is sorely missed. Combining his extensive training and experience with firearms Paul developed the Center Axis Relock (CAR) Shooting System.
His dedication and passion for teaching the CAR System was based on his unwavering belief that the System could help save lives. Considering there are documented cases where Police Officers involved in shootings believe the CAR System contributed to their survival, Paul’s belief seems justified.
Paul’s legacy, The CAR Shooting System will live on.' View Quote That's what I thought before doing some research. It wouldn't kill anyone to do some themselves before throwing out 'videogame superhero stuff', especially if you are just a weekend range shooter.
While I personally wouldn't use it on a daily basis, it is a technique to put in the toolbox. ETA After rereading that, I thought I should say, that wasn't directed at anyone or meant to be demeaning, but it sure looks that way. Lol It's just a technique that may or maynot be useful at some point, but it definitely isn't from Cory and Erika.

Pretty close. CAR is old now. It started showing up around 05', and like any cool new dance move, some of the kids just had to proclaim it as the 'next new best technique'. Some good points, some bad, depending on when and how utilized, like everything else. It has been largely ignored for a reason though, and not because it looks 'Tarded. Center Axis Relock We're proud to offer our students training using the Center Axis Relock (C.A.R.) system, developed by Paul Castle of Sabre Tactical, via IPD Systems. Consists of four easily-transitioned positions (high, combat high, extended, and apogee) that work harmoniously with the body. Harmonious body movement is important because it makes it easier to build instinctive reaction skills. And it's these reaction skills that could save your life if you someday find yourself in a gun fight. Safety Comes First Exercising your American rights under the Second Amendment of the Constitution by bearing and keeping firearms is both a right and a responsibility.
Your responsibility is not just to follow state and federal laws, but to be properly trained to handle and use your firearms. At Civilian Arms Training Source, safety instruction comes first and is the foundation of our training programs. All students are thoroughly instructed in basic rules of gun safety prior to live fire down range. DOES IT WIN MATCHES, against the top men using other systems? If not, why not?I agree with Williams. I do however see your point.
Because we are not comparing apples to apples, the J-Turn in Executive Protection can't be challenged with, 'Does it win the Indy 500? If not, why not?' The CAR seems to be a great system for some situations, but probably would not have been Castle's choice if taking a shot at 50 yards for precision. Perhaps an IDPA match with all targets very close along with other modifications would be a good comparison test? Your point is good though. Thshootinggn world is filled with thousands of instructors who want to invent the newest hottest thing, and the chic systems ought to undergo quality scientific testing.Shepard Humphries. Kind of surprised to see reference of the fact that I have done some beta testing in teaching CAR using Airsoft.
Not sure if ronin wrote this before we decided to work together (I hired him to teach many of my CCW courses in Wisconsin on my behalf and he did a great job) however I don't see why its a bad thing especially considering the beta test groups have been civilians. I have a law enforcement background (short time period) and extensive security backgrounds ranging from event, personal and armored security details so I am not all that much of a novice in the field of LE.
I'm not Captain Combat (he is real apparently by name.and copied SDTS creators system to sell himself) and all jokes aside no one on here is either outside of the figurative form. Whether training tools (as suggested by Paul when I had the pleasure of speaking with him by phone on several occasions for long periods of time before he passed) are used be it any form of simulation tool such as; airsoft, laser and/or specialized devices that work with your live fire tool its all about INNOVATION that allows the CAR system to be taught with what you have. If its designed to be used with OC Spray, Batons, Knives, Firearms then using airsoft for INDOOR training simulations and 'CAR Basics' to see better assess Civilian competency prior to hitting the range can obviously work with great comparison considering the typical range of CAR use and actually allow Instructors to see who is ready to get into CAR in its full form. Not every student will have enough experience with a firearm to make an instructor feel safe in working with them in group classes. Its also a great way for the student to get a general feel for CAR and for the instructor to see how a student reacts to the 'mental confusion' added to basic CAR drills.
This will allow greater confidence in the transition to Live Fire application as we all know its very different than what 99.9% of people have been taught. Civilian or LE student.its a smart, cost effective and safe way to begin training in CAR when student firearm proficiency is not tested prior.
Fact remains that I spoke with Paul often in his last year on this planet and I asked HIM SPECIFICALLY what he thought of some of my ideas on how to teach especially to civilians since that is my primary group I work with. I have been out of LE for so long and feel that more Civilians need to be educated on WHAT WORKS just as much as professionals need the training too! Unfortunately I had 2 separate times I was supposed to get the training from Paul and the first date he fell ill and I actually lost my entire flight costs etc. Which being the amazing guy he was.he offered to accommodate by allowing me free room and board for the next date. Again, his health overcame him and as we got closer to the date Paul simply said he was not going to make it and referred me to one of his best students Mike at Drakon. Mike took on the commitment from Paul like a Champ and even gave me the same offer of room and board for all my training with just a small fee as a favor to Paul.
I am forever thankful to Mike for doing that and I am very excited to have had great training from someone that was so close to Paul. Now.in regards to whether or what should be used to instruct is really going to fall on the basic foundation that Paul built however just like any other 'teaching concept' every TEACHER will have a different way of presenting the same information. As long as the foundation is followed then the integrity of the program is there regardless of how or what may differ from Instructor to Instructor.
I also find it interesting that the eLearning course available by sabretactical itself (another issue for some) is primarily his manual with a bunch of video footage and pictures that were added on top of what Paul had originally taught. Obviously many of those with Master Certs who where working with Paul prior have made this part of the training possible finally and have also understood the power of this enabling many others to become familiarized with CAR even if geographical issues prevent in person training to start. Is it possible to learn the system through video/manuals.absolutely! Is there GREATER benefit to learning in person or having in person instruction added to an eLearning concept.DAMN STRAIGHT!!!
The point is that unfortunately Paul did not have in place a true heir to his company (what I have been told anyway) that would have the perfect format for all to use continuously after he passed outside of the basic foundation he created. From what I hear there has been lots of bickering about who is doing what etc. But it appears that some ordered has been restored now that I finally see the eLearning portion up and running. I don't keep in contact with to many other Instructors outside of Facebook as we all seem to be pretty busy and rather than sling mud on how someone who IS qualified/certified to Instruct is looking to adapt and encourage Civilian based training programs we need to be mindful that as long as the basic foundation is kept Paul's System will continue on.
There are and will be many adaptations to the system just as PAUL had done much to change and adapt CAR itself from its inception in 77-the late 90's when the end formula had been found. I guess it appears that Paul had a change of heart on the civilian training aspect as I was in pretty close contact with him in the last year or so before he passed. He knew that my focus would be on educating primarily civilians (thus I do not teach certain portions ie: Apogee etc.) as I gave my reasoning why law abiding civilians needed this amazing system for personal defense as well. Obviously he was even creating IPDS without another person so that it would be a specified civilian program that emphasized CAR concepts minus the professional portions that civilians would not need. My talks included not just civilian training (which he encouraged me to do personally) but other tools to use in training that could be conducted for indoor training use and FOF work for both civilian and professional courses. CAR is an amazing system regardless of distance as that was the point of having the different shooting positions including Apogee however the primary aspect being fundamental for CQB/CQC both out of and in vehicle response to threats.
I'm glad that I had the chance to speak with Paul directly on the Civilian use as again he saw potential for it being of service to the general public even though certain aspects as he pointed out should remain for professional use only. Its not everyday that someone like Paul creates a monumental breakthrough in the advancement of Firearm Tactics and to exclude the general population which in this country currently have the Right To Bare Arms (or what is left of that 2nd Amendment) would not make sense being that if our Country needed more from its people in time of war that many could have the training it would need to go beyond personal protection.
I'm sure some may not agree but I was glad that Paul was creating and allowed the transition of teaching into the Civilian Populace. Civilian or Professional its still so 'revolutionary' that the mainstream public and professionals usually don't see the 'light' in its effective use because of 'pride and tradition' that clouds the minds of those trained in other formats. In dedicating one part of even my Conceal Carry Courses that reviews the Flight/Fight Response (B.A.R.) and how Traditional vs. CAR training may be detrimental in stopping the threat based on the human bodies natural response to the 'oh $%#!' Moment seems to provide allot of 'ahh-ha' moments to both the civilian and professionals that take the course. The more that learn this system properly the more chances we have of having people that are safer and more effective at stopping any possible threats be it in foreign or domestic land.
Less chance of professional or civilians with improper training 'directly or indirectly' shooting innocent bystanders in active shooter responses when lethal force is the last resort being implemented. I trained with Paul in 2007 & 2008 on four separate occasions. System is very effective and does work. As others, I too, teach C.A.R. To civilians in my Counter-Assault Tactics Shooting courses, because it works, especially in tight quarters like a vehicle, house, apartment, etc. Out of approximately 500 students, whom I have taught C.A.R., NONE have ever said that it didn't work, or that it was not effective. Much to the contrary!
I beg anyone who has trained and truly understands the logistics of the C.A.R. System to say that it doesn't work, or that it is inferior to the Isosceles Triangle or Weaver Stance?! Personally, I have never like or used the Weaver Stance for shooting, but I have used always shot in the modified Weaver prior to learning C.A.R.
To me, the Isosceles Triangle style of shooting (which many shooting schools teach) is a very unnatural and awkward stance. I agree that we need to form some way for current C.A.R. Instructors to pass on Paul's system and get more certified instructors in the system.
Learning to shoot from a variety of positions can save your life. Qualifications: Complete CATS Defensive Tactical Handgun Level 1. Purpose: To develop superior, life-saving gun-fighting skills by building upon your fundamental defensive tactical handgun training. Objectives: Which stance is best? It is often debated among shooters which shooting stance is best. Here at CATS we teach the modified Weaver / Extreme modified Weaver & Bladed stance, it’s true that other stances, such as the Isosceles, have their benefits. However, shooting on the move and getting out of your static placement should become instinctive therefore the stance you end up in will depend on your situation.
You will learn more about stances with hands on training during dry practice and on the range. The reason for not perfecting your shooting skills around a particular stance is that through repetition, the benefits of the stance makes shooting that much more difficult when the situation turns for the worse. You can never predict a situation but you will react to it. The CAR System is exactly what is needed to understand and react to reduce the threat level. It is a system based on gun-fighting skills, not a stance. A system that once understood will increase your odds of survival tremendously compared to just learning to shoot from a stance.
When you are learning the basics and still developing your skills, it’s nice to do it the easiest way. Right or wrong you will develop muscle memory according to your training. Better to build your skills on good solid techniques and tactics early in the game. In the real world of defensive combat gun fighting, you may not always have the luxury of shooting from your favorite stance. In an urban gunfight, to stop a potentially lethal assault, you must rely upon a number of skills besides being able to deliver half dollar size groups on an IPSC target. Survival means being able to use cover, concealment, and tactics that allow you to overcome the threat, or to evade, escape or de-escalate the violence.
Most deadly confrontations begin at a less than lethal level of force, perhaps some shoving or pushing coupled with verbal attacks, Many fights simply get started because somebody threw a punch and the other guy raised the stakes by pulling a knife, a club or a makeshift weapon. Today, Americans are facing new and ever changing lethal threats, as the dark world of terrorism is proliferating and taking aim at western citizens. Whatever the situation may be, you are now certain that you are in jeopardy and decide you must use lethal force to protect your life.
You may already be injured, you may have been knocked down, you may not have two hands available, and you may have caught the peripheral blast of a suicide bomber and still are under attack by his suicidal bent companions. Trouble generally travels in two or more. In such a situation, you can forget about choosing an Isosceles or Weaver stance. Practicing basic marksmanship is not enough to guarantee your survival. You have got to be able to fire your weapon accurately from any position. It’s not where you place your feet that count; it’s where you place your shots. You could be attacked while sitting in your car.
You may have to fire your weapon through the passenger side door while you are bailing out the driver’s door. Single-handed or isometric shooting from a horizontal position is not part of the typical training given to either law enforcement or most security personnel. What to Bring:. Eye and ear protection. Comfortable loose fitting pants (bdu’s). Drop rigs, low rides & tactical holsters may be employed. At least 3 magazines.
Double Magazine Carrier (DMC) for your size mag’s. Your pistol. 400 rounds of ammunition (ammunition may not be available at the range). A sack lunch and plenty of water/fluids to drink.
