Capt.Huffnpuff Blackmagic has been updated to adequately report the speed of SSD devices. When Blackmagic tries to read the Startup Disk, you get the message that the device is not writeable, hence you cannot rate the the transfer rates of the drive.
I found a workaround that will report the rates of the Startup Disk. Its quite simple. Create a disk image (.dmg) using the disk utility specifying file-new image-blank image. Make it big enough for Blackmagic to work with (7+ GB) and name it what you will. Mount the volume (if it is not already mounted).
In Blackmagic select the disk image mounted. Since the “volume” is on your Startup Disk, you will see how fast it drive is. On my 2016 MacBook Pro, I am seeing speeds like 1,000+ MB/s write, and 1100+ MB/S read. I have tried this on my older mackbooks with SSD and they do scale down as the device is older. On an older MacBook Pro the rates I see are 500 MB/S both read and write, as you would expect. I have run Blackmagic on USB 2, thumb drives, USB 3, and USB C devices to see if I’m getting my money’s worth. You can easily detect when a device is performing subpar and, and with the spinning disk, you can see is transfer speeds deteriorates over time.

Using the Select Target Drive item will bring up a standard Finder file dialog box, allowing you to locate the drive you wish to test. One problem you may run into: if you select the startup drive, you may see an error message that Disk Speed Test can’t be run on the selected drive because it is read only. This isn’t a bug, just a bit of a logistics problem. Disk Speed Test is run with the same user privileges as the login account you're using, and the app doesn't have the ability to ask to raise permission levels by asking you for your password.

The workaround is easy enough; when you wish to test your Mac’s startup drive, simply select your own home folder as the directory to be tested. You should then be able to run the speed tests without issues. Blackmagic refers to the test size as the stress size. It’s really just the size of the dummy file the app will use for writing and reading.
The choices are 1 GB, 2 GB, 3 GB, 4 GB, and 5 GB. The size you choose is important; ideally, it needs to be larger than any cache a hard drive may include in its design. The idea is to make sure the Disk Speed Test is actually testing the write, read speed to the platters of a mechanical drive or the flash memory modules of an SSD, and not the faster memory cache used in the drive's controller. Finally, if you're testing a Fusion drive, remember that a Fusion drive is usually not the best candidate for being the storage target for video recording or playback, since it's difficult to predict where the video files will be stored, on the fast SSD or the slow hard drive. Nevertheless, if you would like to measure the performance of your Fusion drive, use the larger 5 GB stress file size, and watch the speedometers closely. When you start the test, you'll likely see relatively slower write and read speeds as the first couple of tests are written to the slower hard drive.
At some point, your Mac will decide the test file is one you're using often, and move it to the faster SSD. You can actually see this occur on the write and read speedometers.

But I think I get the point, and if I do, I think it's intrusive and an issue for me because in a work environment there are workstations that are so critical that they are not connected to the internet to prevent any chance of being hacked or getting viruses. I don't understand why Apple is being so intrusive and controlling- this is not a matter of losing revenue, I am not trying to steal any software, this is a free app.

Want to find out how well your hard drive will fare while working with video editing applications on your Mac? Looking for an excuse to buy an SSD for your Mac? Download Disk Speed Test. Disk Speed Test by Blackmagic allows you to quickly measure and certify your disk drives for working with video. The application is designed to determine how well you hard drive will fare while editing large files, specifically.
Download and install the free application from the Mac App Store. Open Launchpad to find DiskSpeedTest and launch it. When Speed Test launches you will find yourself staring at two large speed gauges that measure your hard drive’s Write and Read speeds.
You will also find that there’s a gear icon between the two gauges that points to the app’s options. Fortunately options are few so all you have to do is select the drive you wish to test, in case you use external storage for your video editing or you have multiple drives on your Mac.

Once you select the drive, the next step is to select the Stress level that your hard disk will be tested to. The options range from 1GB to 5GB.
Select the option you wish to use from the list. Once selected, click the large Speed Test Start button. The rim around the gauge will change to red indicating the speed under test. Once the application goes through several passes you will be presented with a list of results by video type and frame rate. You should allow the application to go through several passes to see how results vary. The panel lists common video formats and instantly displays a check or cross to show if the disk performance will be adequate for the desired video format. Looks like I need an SSD When you are done, click the Start button again to stop testing.
When you close the application the temporary file created for testing will be deleted from the hard drive.
